Location: Antarctica and the South Pole.
Duration: 14-21 days
Scientific skills: Astrobiology, physics, astronomy, glaciology, meteorology, psychology
Expeditionary skills: Adaptability, endurance, mountaineering, ice climbing, glacier driving, scenario planning, survival and leadership.
Historical relevance: Learn about the race to the South Pole where it happened and join the group of the very few who have actually reached the South Pole itself.
Category 5 Expedition
Leadership Training is taken to the extreme on this 2 week expedition to the South Pole. You will learn about the great polar explorers, their success and failures and what that can teach us about leadership. You will learn how astronauts are trained for extreme environments and long duration locked up in confined spaces. You will learn how legends are created.
Experience a solar eclipse from the bottom of the planet. On December 3rd a unique celestial event will take place when a full solar eclipse will occur. And you will be there to witness it. As we explore the continent you will learn about the importance of the South Pole for our planet, for research not only on life on Earth but also to help us understand potential life on other planets (astrobiology) and how the South Pole on Earth compares to the South Pole on the Moon and Mars and their importance for colonisation.
We are heading into our planets coldest, driest and most remote place on Earth. The closest thing to actually being in space and where many NASA astronauts have gotten their training before going to space. You will be led by polar explorer and mountaineer Vilborg Arna Gissurardottir who has climbed the seven summits and walked solo to the South Pole and she will take you on a true expedition into an area where no man has been before.
Get your spot in the history books when you become the first man or woman to climb a mountain that has never been climbed before. We will look at maps and satellite images, conduct a route plan and execute our expedition into the unknown. And don't forget to bring the flag of your country or your company with you and make it part of history.
Drive the most superior vehicles on the planet as we move across the ice sheet towards the Amundsen/Scott station at the South Pole. It is a long drive, as can be expected on a true expedition, but unlike the early explorers you will have the luxury of flying back, like an astronaut.
The estimated journey time is 14 days, but you should have the flexibility of adding up to a week to accommodate delays due to weather and difficult conditions. This is a fully sustainable trip. Everything you bring with you in you bring with you out. Your carbon footprint will be fully compensated.
Trainers: Vilborg Arna Gissurardottir Head of Mountaineering and Survival, Hjortur Smarason, Founder and Principal.
Next start date: December 1st 2021 from Punta Arena, Chile
